“Empty House”
Sometimes, in our lives, we have to let go of things we don’t want to say goodbye to. Sometimes it works. Other times we draw comics about places that only exist in our imaginations so that we don’t have to say goodbye just yet.
One of the harder things I have had to do in the past two years, amongst a litany of “tough stuff”, is to move out of my house that Ian and I shared for four years of my time in San Diego. Looking at this page brings back so many memories of good times we had together there.
The pie party.
The time Chad lived in our living room for 3.5 months.
Cavebot.
Roof cats.
The time our refrigerator housed a keg for a month that was sitting on the jack for my Toyota Echo. (Which I subsequently sold my car without!)
There are two things completely fabricated and not real in this page (other than the fact that Hawk does not exist).
1 – we never had a coffee table in front of that futon/couch. It was actually an extension of the futon/couch that made you able to put your feet up, but definitely NO coffee table.
2 – That tree, the one in panel one over growing onto our makeshift porch? That was a palm tree. Not the bushy tree I drew there.

I just felt the need to comment because that was a great pie party that I had forgotten about until I read this page. Haha. I’ve known about Hipster Picnic for a long time, I was always interested and just now have really sat down to read it all. I think you’ve done a great job and at this point in the story I’m really starting to get sucked in. I love seeing pieces of San Diego in there, like the house you lived in and balboa park.
thanks Tara! Hopefully some more San Diego shots to come. I am loving the chances to draw that. I would love to specifically get more of the park. -P
