“Don’t Push It”

Ian came to visit this weekend! It was amazing walking around the countryside of Wales and southwestern England together, with our wives, and thinking about how far we have come in our friendship. In the next month, or so, we will have been friends for twenty years.

Twenty years since the moment depicted in this comic.

When I look back at the last two decades, and think about the time that a life exists in, I immediately think of one of the opening lines from Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunset”. Jesse, the lead character, is discussing a book idea he has:

“Well, I always kind of wanted to write a book that all took place within the space of a pop song, you know, like 3 or 4 minutes long, the whole thing.”
Read the whole script here.

This is how I think of the last twenty years, as a montage of memories strung together based on the steady beat of feelings that are interwoven, complex, and simple – all at the same time. Working on Hipster Picnic, and really moving through all of these moments, trying to precisely capture them through the foggy lense of my mind is a great meditation. I could have never guessed that the most rewarding part of working on autobiographical work was going to be the revisiting memories and feelings. They often feel so completely real that my breath is taken away.

In sixth grade.

Realizing that I finally had a friend.

At thirty-two, knowing that forever isn’t really as long as this two young people really think. That in the span of a pop-song that they will be married, living thousands of miles from the place they had met, looking at a green field from atop a castle in the Welsh countryside.
